A Dark and Moody Autumn Wedding at Maryculter House

emma83230

Nestled on the banks of the River Dee, just outside Aberdeen, Maryculter House is a venue steeped in history and charm. Dating back to the 13th century, this former Knights Templar residence blends traditional Scottish elegance with a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal setting for a truly unforgettable wedding.

Last October, we had the pleasure of providing florals for a wedding that embraced the season’s beauty with a unique and dramatic twist. Instead of the usual fiery oranges and rustic reds associated with autumn weddings, the couple opted for a richer, moodier palette, creating an atmosphere of opulence and romance.

A Luxurious Take on Autumnal Florals

The bride’s bouquet was a statement piece, lush and unstructured, featuring deep burgundy roses, velvety dahlias, and striking, star like ammi. These were complemented by pops of textural elements and hints of dark foliage, adding interest to the arrangement.

For the ceremony, we decorated an arch that the couple had hired from Ruffle & Rose, and lined the aisle with jars of more gorgeous flowers.

The Reception: An Enchanting Autumn Evening

All of the flowers from during the ceremony were able to be repurposed as table decoration adding to the already stunning Maryculter House, with its grand yet cosy atmosphere, providing the perfect setting for this beautifully unconventional take on autumn wedding florals. The venue’s history, combined with the couple’s vision, resulted in a celebration that was both timeless and unforgettable.

We were thrilled when the bride shared her professional wedding photos with us last week (shout out to Colourful and Creative Aberdeen Wedding Photographer || Clarke Joss). Seeing our flowers captured in such stunning detail was truly a joy!

A note on the stationery

To complement the rich and moody floral theme, we designed bespoke wedding stationery that reflected the couple’s vision. The on-the-day stationery, including a table plan and table names, featured complimentary floral illustrations that mirrored the arrangements seen throughout the venue. Every detail was thoughtfully curated to ensure a seamless and cohesive aesthetic.
